SARANAC LAKE — Over 100 women attended the Women in Business Conference “Inspire and Ignite” on March 7 hosted by the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce.

The conference was held at the Paul Smith’s College Visitor Interpretive Center and women from throughout the North Country attended to connect and learn through keynote speakers, guided networking, breakout sessions, and activities. The conference was held during National Women’s History Month and the day before International Women’s Day; the global holiday promoting the achievements of women and encouraging activism and equal rights.

Businesses large and small were represented; there were women who are running their own businesses to women representing large businesses including industries in hospitality, manufacturing, health care, local government, information technology, banking, education, real estate, outdoor recreation, non-profits, and more.

Women traveled from Massena, Malone, Plattsburgh, Potsdam, Keene Valley, Watertown, Wilmington, Tupper Lake, Lake Placid and Saranac Lake and surrounding areas to participate in the day. Keynote speaker Devan Robinson spoke about “The Power of our Thoughts” and emphasized how thoughts can be a force for both creation and destruction, shaping our actions and our success.

“I am absolutely blown away by the diversity of talents and experiences represented by the women of the Adirondacks. This conference has given us a powerful way to learn, grow and connect with each other,” said Mindy Audlin, morning keynote speaker and conference participant.

Three women were honored during the day with the Leadership and Impact awards. Lauren Richard, Small Business Services Coordinator from the Adirondack North Country Association, was awarded The Mountain Mover; an award that recognizes someone who brings her authentic self to the workplace. Lauren was described as kind, smart, and always willing to help anyone in need. She helps small businesses and entrepreneurs and goes above and beyond in many projects; she is truly a team player.

Kelly Metzgar, Executive Director of the Adirondack North Country Gender Alliance, received the Trailblazer Award which recognizes an individual who shows the spirit of the Adirondacks; her work is reflective of the community and culture in which we live. Kelly is always bright and positive and willing to talk with anyone and she works hard both in her career and volunteer projects to educate the community, advocate for equal rights, and create a safe space for all.

The third award, The Pathfinder, was awarded to Lisa Brown, the founder and CEO of CST Group, Computer Support and Training. The Pathfinder honors an individual who brings people together whether in business, in their workplace, or in the community providing support and connection making a positive impact on each individual. Lisa was described as hardworking, and dedicated to not only her business that she has grown over the last 24 years, but to the success of others as well.

“We are so excited to have so many women across the region gathered in one place. As part of our mission and strategic initiative, The Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce works to bring businesses together, to connect people, to form partnerships, and we did that today. Many participants have already asked if we are holding the event next year … based on today’s success the answer is yes,” said Rachel Karp, executive director of the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce.
