Saranac Laker graduates with honors from Howard

WASHINGTON — Mistre Abebe Newton, daughter of Philip Newton and Dianne Fortado of Saranac Lake, recently graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Howard University in Washington, D.C.

Newton was a 2019 graduate of Saranac Lake High School, where she participated in many activities including the New Vision program for students interested in careers in medicine. Her undergraduate degree is in Human Performance with a Concentration in Sports Medicine.

She is now a first-year medical student at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and hopes to later study obstetrics and gynecology.

Local students graduate from Clarkson University

POTSDAM — Students from Clarkson University were awarded bachelor’s, masters and doctoral degrees this spring on May 13.

¯ Tyler Atkins of AuSable Forks received a Bachelor of Science degree with distinction in civil engineering.

¯ Beth Fisher of Lake Placid received a Bachelor of Science degree with great distinction in environmental science and policy, environmental health science minor, biology minor.

¯ Justin Perry of Lake Placid received a Bachelor of Professional Studies degree with distinction.

¯ Anna Ellithorpe of Saranac Lake received a Bachelor of Science degree with great distinction in innovation and entrepreneurship, economics minor.

¯ Phillip Buck of Saranac Lake received a Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering.

¯ Stephen Huyck of Saranac Lake received a Bachelor of Science degree with distinction in environmental science and policy.

¯ Elliott Fletcher of Tupper Lake received a Bachelor of Science degree with distinction in civil engineering.

Keene Valley student earns music degree from University of Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. — Jonah Kazmierczak of Keene Valley graduated from the University of Vermont this spring with a bachelor’s degree in music.

UVM President Suresh Garimella conferred degrees on an estimated 3,383 graduates at the university’s 222nd commencement ceremony. Speaking on the spirit of excellence, Sethuraman Panchanathan, director of the U.S. National Science Foundation, delivered the keynote address.

Long Laker named to University of Hartford’s President’s Honors List

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — The University of Hartford recently announced that Karmen Howe of Long Lake was named to its President’s Honors List for the spring semester.

The President’s Honors List is made up of an extremely select group of students who earned a grade point average of 3.75 or higher in the semester. This is the GPA that must be sustained over a full undergraduate career to qualify for a summa cum laude degree.

Local students named to President’s List at HVCC

TROY — Angela Howard of Saranac Lake, who is studying in the Individual Studies academic program, was one of more than 1,400 students named to the spring 2023 President’s List at Hudson Valley Community College.

Each fall and spring term, the college’s President’s List names those full-time students and part-time students registered for at least six college credits who have a term average of between 3.5 and 4.0 and who received no grade of “D,” “F,” “I,” “Z” or “W” on their record for that term. Students must have completed at least 12 college credits successfully.

Sleime makes honors lists at Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C. — Sophia Sleime of St. Regis Falls finished her freshman year at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, making the school’s Dean’s List in the fall 2022 semester and the Chancellor’s List in the spring 2023 semester.

She is leaning toward a major in Public Relations and is a sister in Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, where she is the DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) ambassador.

Locals make Dean’s List at SUNY Oneonta

ONEONTA — Three locals were among more than 1,100 SUNY Oneonta students who earned Dean’s List honors for the spring 2023 semester.

Local students who earned this honor include:

¯ Mecalyn Sousa of Saranac Lake

¯ Logyn Sousa-Thompson of Saranac Lake.

To qualify for the Dean’s List, a student must earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher while carrying a course load of 12 hours or more.

Brady makes Holy Cross Dean’s List

WORCESTER, Mass. — Matthew Brady of Lake Placid was named to the College of the Holy Cross spring 2023 Dean’s List.

A member of the Class of 2026, Brady was named to the Dean’s List for outstanding academic achievement during the fall semester of the 2022-23 academic year. To qualify, students must pass four or more letter-graded courses with no failing grades during the semester and earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Bullock makes Hamilton College Dean’s List

CLINTON — Lydia Bullock of Lake Placid was named to the Dean’s List at Hamilton College for the spring 2023 semester.

Bullock, a rising sophomore, is a graduate of Hotchkiss School.

To be named to the Dean’s List, a student must have carried a course load of four or more graded credits throughout the semester and earned an average GPA of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale.
