Saranac Lakers to bike 2,000 miles down Colorado River

SARANAC LAKE — Saranac Lake High School alumnnae Katie Trudeau and Jenny Curtis plan to set out in September on a 2,000-mile bike ride.

They are part of The Water Cycle, a woman-led bike ride along the Colorado River watershed that aims to collect stories from people who live along the river. Trudeau thought up the project while in graduate school in Colorado, and Curtis, a longtime friend, joined to contribute her art and writing talents.

This multi-month bicycle expedition aims to create a web of connections across the Colorado River by highlighting the voices of everyday people and those seldom heard within the watershed.

The Water Cycle team — which totals seven women including teachers, artists, and scientists — will stop along river communities and is offering free school programs about the Colorado River as well as collecting stories for an oral history. The riders will start near the mouth of the Colorado River in Grand Lake, Colorado, and aim to reach the end of the river in Mexicali, Mexico, in early December.

The bike ride is supported by National Geographic, but additional funding is needed. Donations can be made at www.gofundme.com/f/watercycle-education-project.
