TUPPER LAKE – The Tupper Lake Middle-High School has announced Sophia Martin as its class of 2019 valedictorian and Emily Burns as its salutatorian.

Sophia Martin is the daughter of Catherine and Dominic Martin. She has been greatly involved in school activities ever since entering the Middle/High school. She has participated in varsity soccer, basketball and outdoor track. She has held captain positions in each sport and has received several section MVP’s and First Team All-Northerns for track and field. She is a member of the Red and Black Players, Band, Chorus, Green Team, Ski Club, Student Council, and is the Vice President of National Honor Society.

Throughout high school, she attended academic activities such as Clarkson University’s three-year Horizons summer program, SUNY Canton’s Women in Engineering workshop and the DiMarco Leadership Seminar.

Some awards she has received throughout high school include the Marcy Spoor Memorial Scholar Athlete Award, the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award, and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Medal Award.

Next year, she plans to attend the University of Exeter in Southwestern England to study engineering.

Emily Burns is the daughter of Robert and Valerie Burns from Tupper Lake. She has been involved in a multitude of activities throughout her high school career, including the National Honor Society, varsity soccer as well as track and field, Green Team, the Lumberjack Lyre, chorus, and the Red and Black Players, playing various leadership roles throughout her participation.

She has been the recipient of several awards in her high school career, most notably the Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award for her commitment to social justice, and the Augsbury North Country Scholarship.

This fall, Emily plans on attending St. Lawrence University to study psychology.
