LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid girls basketball team jumped out to an early lead at home on Thursday against Elizabethtown-Lewis, but the Lions left town with a 42-37 win.

The Blue Bombers started strong, with Grace Crawford putting up the first points of the game early in the first quarter. But Elizabethtown-Lewis evened it up at six apiece, and Brianna Cornwright drained her first three-pointer of the night to put the visitors up 11-9 at the end of the first quarter.

Crawford tied it up at 11 on her way to 12 points on the night, but the Lions started to pull away in the second as their shots began to fall. The visitors went on an 8-0 run and went into halftime with a 23-15 lead.

Deidra Kellerman, who had a team-high 14 for Lake Placid, drained a couple of buckets early in the third to bring the Bombers to within six. Natalie Tavares kept the home team’s roll going when she tied it up at 27 with 47 seconds left in the third quarter.

Crawford put the Blue Bombers on top early in the fourth, but the Lions bounced back and held a slim lead for the rest of the quarter before putting it away in the last two minutes.

Lake Placid struggled throughout the contest, going just two for 15 from the free throw line, but spread the scoring around as Tavares, Crawford, Kellerman, Izzy Armstrong and Dylan Bashaw each contributed in the loss. Elizabethtown-Lewis’s Analise Burdo led all scorers with 18.

Lake Placid coach Jeff Potter said his team could have won if they made the easy baskets.

“We missed too many put-backs and layups, that was the game,” Potter said. “We gotta make the easy buckets. We should have been up by 15 or so, but we missed 14 put-backs and layups — so open shots. We had a great third quarter, came back and tied it up. But down the stretch, you gotta make the buckets to win.

“It’s a tough week, they’ve got a lot of distractions right now, and they played like that. We’re a better team than that.”

The Blue Bombers fell to 6-11 overall with the loss.

Elizabethtown-Lewis coach Terry Egglefield said her team is on the upswing after a mid-season gut check.

“I think that my girls made some really poor decisions in the beginning, but they pulled it together quickly. They played as a unit tonight, and we’re down one player so we only had one sub, so that’s really good,” she said. “I think they played fantastic.

“The beginning of the season we did not play as team; we were good individual players but we did not play as a team. And then at the halfway mark, I pulled them aside and said ‘This isn’t OK.’ The next day, we came together and I really feel like we’re going to have more wins at the end of the season. We had some very close games, and I think we’re pretty evenly matched up with some of the teams we lost to, so I think we can give them a run for their money and I’m excited about that.”

Lake Placid plays its next-to-last game of the regular season Tuesday at Minerva/Newcomb at 6:30 p.m.
