LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid boys basketball team jumped out to an early lead against visiting Long Lake/Indian Lake and never looked back Wednesday night on the way to a 42-15 victory.

The Blue Bombers put the first points of the game on the board, and managed to keep the Orange scoreless throughout the first quarter. The home team’s smothering defense put them up 12-0 at the end of the first period.

The Orange’s Aiden Atwell got the visitors on the board 30 seconds into the second quarter when he drained a pair of free throws, but with a 20-2 lead midway through the quarter, Lake Placid could afford to be patient. Even as outside and three-point shooting attempts fell flat, the Bombers secured enough rebounds and short jump shots to go into the half up 22-2.

Long Lake/Indian Lake rallied a bit in the third quarter, with the visitors posting seven points, but Lake Placid continued to dominate and went into the final period with a 35-9 lead.

Lake Placid’s Jake Coursen scored three of his game-high 11 points in the third, while Jack Armstrong had 10 points and Justin Novick tallied five points in the win. The Bombers spread the scoring around, with Jesse Izzo, Matt White, Matt Brandes, Jacob Novick and Will Quilla each contributing in the win.

Atwell led the Orange with five points on the night.

Lake Placid continued to roll through the fourth, as the starters sat and the second string earned some valuable playing time.

Long Lake/Indian Lake continued its winless season while the Blue Bombers improved to 10-4.

Orange coach Mike Lamphear said his team just did not play well in the league matchup.

“Terrible, just like every other game,” Lamphear said. “We have to work on the same stuff (like) rebounding, boxing out. Our defense played about normal tonight. We don’t play bad defense, we just have no offense.”

Lake Placid coach Brian Van Nostrand said the game was an important way to get more of his bench onto the court as sectionals lie on the horizon.

“The boys played well. Especially not having our leading scorer tonight out due to sickness,” Van Nostrand said. “I’m proud of the boys and the way they performed; they got the rust off tonight.

“It’s good to give them (the bench) more experience in case we need to call on them as the season progresses, especially come sectional time. Getting that experience is definitely needed especially toward the end of the season.”

The Blue Bombers next travel to Elizabethtown-Lewis for a game on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
