Red Storm close tourney with a victory

SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake boys hockey team responded to its opening night loss Friday with a 3-2 victory over Niskayuna/Schenectady on Saturday in the Casey McHugh Memorial Tournament.

Alex Dukette scored twice in the first period and Hugo Hobson scored his first career varsity goal in the third as the Red Storm took a 3-0 lead. Niskayuna closed the gap with two goals at the end of the third period, but Saranac Lake was able to hold on for the victory.

Bruno Freeman registered 19 saves in goal for the Red Storm, who outshot Niskayuna 36-21.

Saranac Lake opened the tournament Friday with an 8-6 loss to Burnt Hills/Ballston Spa.

Lake Placid lost both its games in the tournament, falling 3-1 to Niskayuna/Schenectady on Friday and 10-3 to Burnt Hills on Saturday.

Brendan Bullock, Hunter Wilmot and Patrick Van Ness each scored goals for the Blue Bombers in Saturday’s game. Jared Difiore and Jack Casey each had hat tricks in the game.

Burnt Hills was declared the winner of the tournament based on a two-game point system.
