NORTH CREEK — The Nordic ski courses at Gore Mountain in North Creek were recently awarded International Ski Federation certifications that could allow the facility to host college, national and international skiing events.

The North Creek Ski Bowl earned the certifications for the 2.5-kilometer, the 3.3K, the 1.2K and the 1.6K sprint course. According to a press release, this makes Gore Mountain one of 29 FIS-certified sites in the country.

“The logistics of the venue, width of the courses, and safety of the layout are all considered along with elevation changes, spectator access and other components necessary to bring a level of professional consistency for athletes that are competing internationally,” the press release said. “The certifications enable Gore to competitively pursue bids events such as New England Nordic Ski Association (NENSA) sanctioned races, Division 1 collegiate races and even World Cup level races.”

“The new certifications make us more competitive with other venues when bidding to host a variety of high-caliber race events,” Gore Mountain marketing manager Emily Stanton wrote in an email. “With them, we will continue building our reputation as an ideal location for a variety of races including National Qualifiers, Division I collegiate races, NENSA events, etcetera. A World Cup race is the best example of an event we could not hold without these certifications, but it is more about the fact that our courses have formally been approved for their consistency with what athletes are likely to find as they travel nationally and internationally for competitions.

“The North Creek Ski Bowl’s Nordic Center was designed with the goal of eventually obtaining these certifications, so the trail work needed recently was minor — mainly some regrading of terrain. The natural amphitheater layout of the Ski Bowl has proven to be a great fit for the experience of both athletes and spectators.”

The Ski Bowl will host the NYSPHSAA nordic ski championships for the third year in a row, after the championships were moved to Gore in 2017 and 2018. This year, the mountain will host both the high school Nordic and alpine ski state championships. This season’s Nordic championships will take place on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 25 and 26 next year.
