Red Storm fall in baseball battle

CHAMPLAIN — After dropping the first two games of the season by a combined 32-3 score, Saranac Lake’s baseball team found itself in quite a battle on Friday against an unbeaten opponent.

Unfortunately, the Red Storm still came up short in a bid for their first victory, falling 5-4 on the road against unbeaten Northeastern Clinton.

The Cougars scored all their runs in the first three innings on the way to improving to 3-0 in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference. The Red Storm scored once in their first at-bat, added one more run in the top of the third and sent two more runners across the plate in the fifth to make it a 5-4 final.

Casey Sturgeon and Robert Stephenson both had 2-for-4 performances at the plate for Saranac Lake. Stephenson finished with a double and two RBI and Sturgeon had one RBI.

Matt Kratts pitched the first five innings for the Red Storm, and on offense, the senior scored two runs on passed balls and stole another base. Freshman Rhett Darrah also finished with two runs scored and two stolen bases.

Kyle Vasser picked up the pitching win for the Cougars, and Brayden LaValley added a double for the winners.

Despite the setback, first-year Saranac Lake coach Kyle Mochol was pleased with what he saw from his players.

“This was a completely different ball team than the one that took the field Monday (and) Wednesday. Although we came up short in the end, our level of play was vastly improved from our previous games,” Mochol said. “We sharpened up our defense, limiting errors and making much needed outs. On offense, the bats started to come alive and we made smart decisions on the bases. It was great to see a team who took a couple of tough losses the first two games out, come out in today’s game and be focused and ready to play some good baseball.”

Potsdam 18, Saranac Lake 8

POTSDAM — After having its first two matchups of the season postponed due to weather, the Saranac Lake girls lacrosse team finally got to compete when it traveled to face Potsdam on Friday.

In the end, the Red Storm found out they have work to do as the Sandstoners went on to post an 18-8 victory in Section X action.

Alana McDonald and Josie Brusso were the big Storm killers as they combined for 13 of the ‘Stoners’ goals. Sophie Compeau also chipped in three tallies in the win.

Freshman Lydia Bullock paced Saranac Lake with four goals.

Potsdam improved to 3-2 in the league and 4-3 overall with the win. Saranac Lake dropped to 0-1.
