Northwood kicks off tourney with win
LAKE PLACID — The 39th annual Northwood Invitational kicked off at the Olympic Center on Friday, and the host prep team got off to a solid start with a 5-2 victory over the Islanders U18 squad on the 1980 Rink.
Northwood gave up the first goal of the game, and then stormed back with the next three tallies of the contest to jump on top 3-1. The Islanders netted the final goal of the opening 25-minute half, scoring just 27 seconds before intermission to make it a 3-2 contest, but were blanked the rest of the way while the Huskies found the back of the net two more times in the second half, including an empty-netter in the closing seconds.
Weston Batt finished with two goals and an assist to lead Northwood, while Alex Ray, Grey Pfefferkorn and Sutton Allard buried one puck each in the win. Batt’s second goal of the game was an empty-netter with four seconds remaining on the clock.
Aleksei Rutkovskii, Anthony Nicolla, Finley Ulrick and Tristan Allard also picked up an assist each for the Huskies. Wyatt Friedlander earned the win in goal for Northwood.
Kyle Conover and Frank Fragomeni scored a goal each for the Islanders.
Action in the tournament continues today through Monday.
In addition to the prep squad, host Northwood is also being represented the boys junior and girls team. All three will be on the ice today, starting with the girls, who square off against Selects Academy at 11 a.m. on the USA Rink. The boys prep team is back on the ice for a 2:45 p.m. matchup against Cheshire Academy at the USA Rink, and the juniors will take on the Jr. Bruins at 4 p.m on the 1932 Rink.
