Speed skaters converge for Empire State Winter Games

LAKE PLACID – Speed skaters from throughout the region converged in Lake Placid last weekend to compete in the Empire State Winter Games. More than 50 skaters participated in short and long track events.

Long track events were held Friday evening and Saturday morning on the Olympic Oval. Short track took place Saturday and Sunday morning at the 1932 rink inside the Olympic Center.

Local speed skating was well-represented, with skaters from the two clubs earning medals in their age categories in long track events. Adirondack Speed Skating Club members Fletcher Codd, Esther Munoz, Sydney Yu Terpening, Joe Franz and Molly Turco competed. Munoz, Terpening, and Codd won their age categories.

Franz placed first in the 500-meter, the 1,000 and the 1,500, and was second in his age category in the 3,000. Turco of the Adirondack Speed Skating Club placed second in her age category across the board.

The Lake Placid Speed Skating Club was represented by Isabel, Matthew and Sarah Crovella, and new competitors Delaney and Grady O’Brian. Isabel Crovella placed second in her age category, while Sarah Crovella was second in the 500, 1,500 and 3,000 and third in the 1,000.

Matthew Crovella placed first in all races in his age category. Delaney O’Brien placed third in almost all races in her age category.

Carole Moore, who is a member of both the Flushing Meadows Speed Skating Club and the Lake Placid Speed Skating Club and has been skating in Lake Placid since 1966, won all distances in her age category.

In short track speed skating, Adirondack Speed Skating Club members Sydney Yu Turpening and Molly Turco competed. In Scholastic C ladies, Terpening placed second in the 777, first in the 1,000, third in the 500 and first in the 1,500.

In the open ladies category, Turco earned a first in the 1,000 and 777, and a silver medal in the 500 and 1,500.

Isabel and Matthew Crovella also competed in short track. Isabel earned a fourth-place finish in the 444, second in 333, third in 500 and second in the 777 in the Pre Scholastic A Ladies event. Her brother Matthew placed first in the 777 and 1,500, and second in the 1,000 and 500 races in the Scholastic C Mens category. Carole Moore won all distances in the Masters Ladies category.
