Recent reporting

To the editor:

On the anniversary of the birth of the great American athlete Seabiscuit, I must protest a recent Adirondack Daily Enterprise article. Glynis Hart’s piece on potholes outed two of my favorite fishing spots, then encouraged the village of Saranac Lake to fill them in, altering the pristine beauty of two Adirondack waterways for the recent future.

The huge pothole at the entrance to Helen Street was deep and had enough to use wet flies, yielding a 16-inch brook trout taken on a No. 12 Blue Dun this April. The paternoster pond potholes along Church Street have yielded several native brown trout, often taken with smaller, Fran Betters-designed AuSable Wulff dry flies.

A catch-and-release fisher, I object strenuously to destruction of local trout habitat, and Ms. Hart’s aggressive reporting that revealed my trout potholes to the village road crew. I hope she stays away from Lake Placid’s Mirror Lake Drive. It has some deep holes that collect enough road salt to contain dandy bonefish.
