March is Eye Donor Month
To the editor:
March 2018 has been designated Eye Donor Month.
The Sight Society of Northeastern New York (Lions Eye Bank of Albany) provide ocular tissue for transplantation, medical education and research. In 2017 the Lions Eye Bank of Albany helped to restore sight to nearly 300 people suffering from corneal blindness.
Many people take their eyesight for granted, but for those who are visually impaired sight is a most precious gift. Through the technology of medical science complete restoration of sight has been made possible through corneal transplant surgery.
It is estimated that 2,000 individuals will lose their sight each month. But due to the gift of sight, not all will be destined to live their lives in darkness. A corneal transplant provides a second chance for sight.
Please help make it possible for the blind to regain their sight. Give the gift of sight.
To learn more about this most humanitarian of gifts, contact the Sight Society of Northeastern New York at 518-489-7606 or Saranac Lake Lions Club President David Martin at 518-891-2172.
