Teachers host ‘Shop Local’ event Thursday
To the editor:
Thank you for the annual reminder in your editorial of Nov. 25 (“Shop locally”) to “shop locally as much as you can for your Christmas gifts this year.” Your rationale for buying holiday gifts from businesses based here is compelling. Here are a few more reasons to shop where you live, from the American Independent Business Alliance:
¯ Smaller-scale, community-serving businesses are healthier for the environment. (They take up less land, locate closer to where residents live and create less traffic and air pollution.)
¯ Surveys consistently show that independent businesses best their box-store competitors in overall customer satisfaction. (Shopping locally often saves you money.)
¯ When businesses are owned locally, residents with roots in the community help make key decisions about development that affect our lives and the environment. (Local ownership of retail shops, restaurants, etc., enhances local democracy.)
Members of the Saranac Lake Teachers Association are making their lists and checking them twice ahead of our annual “Shop Local” event on Thursday, Dec. 7, from 3 to 6 p.m. On behalf of the SLTA, I encourage everyone to join us on Dec. 7 (bring friends!) to smash sales records, boost the bottom line and tell our great community merchants that we appreciate them and are glad to have them here!
