Hotel Saranac shouldn’t compete
To the editor:
Like everyone else, I am thrilled the Hotel Saranac will be reopening. However, some of their success should not be on the backs of other stores already in town.
It has already been pledged $5 million in state economic funding.
My specific concern is its retail store may directly harm the Community Store across the street, as well as other store owners in town. I would encourage them to sell items these other stores do not offer and encourage guests to explore downtown Saranac Lake.
Competition is wonderful, but retailers should be expanding offerings, not competing directly, as it will ultimately hurt them. If downtown stores shutter, the hotel would be less desirable as well.
