Snowshoe race volunteers: Thank you!

To the editor:

I wish to express my personal thanks to the countless people from the village of Saranac Lake and surroundings. It would be impossible for me to name all the individuals and groups that came together to help make the Snowshoe World Championships happen and be a success under some of the direst of circumstances.

Thanks to the two dozen-plus folks who showed up Friday morning at 9 o’clock to do trail work, shoveling snow from the woods onto the trails and digging trenches so that water could run off without going across the trails.

Thanks to the 50-plus people who showed up at 8 o’clock Saturday morning to do more shoveling and more trenching, some of whom stayed on the trail during the race to do patching between laps.

Big thanks to the village Department of Public Works crew who delivered and spread many, many truckloads of snow onto the start-finish area, the lodge area and part of the trail. And thanks to the town of North Elba for delivering several truckloads of snow from Lake Placid.

Thank you, thank you to Jason Smith for his heroic efforts at Dewey Mountain directing volunteers, running the groomer, marking trails, etc.

Thanks to the people who worked as course/corner marshals pointing the racers in the right direction, to the medical support staff, to the Baptist church doing the feed stations, to the school group doing the water/energy drink station, the registration volunteers, the performers at the opening ceremony, the parade organizers and participants, the banquet committee, etc.

The list seems endless because so many people came together to make this all possible. Apologies to any I may have overlooked.

It truly takes a village to raise a snowshoe championship.

Thank you,

Rich Shapiro

A very grateful member of the organizing committee
