County leader makes racist Facebook post

To the editor:

Re: Joel LaPierre’s Obamanation:

I am appalled and offended by the ugly and blatantly racist remarks St. Lawrence County Legislator Joel L. LaPierre made about President Obama in a recent Facebook posting. I am not writing here to argue the pros and cons of Mr. Obama’s presidency. But for a public official to make such barbaric comments about a man who served our country in its highest office, and then to publish his insults on Facebook tells us much more about Mr. LaPierre than it does about the man who will soon be departing the White House.

Mr. Lapierre has demonstrated that he is not fit to hold a reasonable opinion, let alone public office. He calls President Obama “Big Ears” and accuses him of being a Muslim. Then LaPierre even stoops so low as to insult the first lady and advocate to have the president and his family sent on a one-way trip to Kenya, “where you were born,” revealing his own ignorance of the facts.

Mr. LaPierre has proven himself as the bigot and dullard that he is. Big ears are generally regarded as a sign of wisdom. Small minds are generally the source of stupid and intentionally hurtful comments. There are a number of colleges and universities in the North Country. The students attending those colleges should rise up and demand Mr. LaPierre’s resignation.

Sincerely,

Brian P. Barrett
