Sylvia W. (Rivers) Sawyer Hatch

Sylvia Wanada (Rivers) Sawyer Hatch, 76, of 89 Greenwood St., Lake Placid, passed away at home Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015 with loving family by her side.

Born Sept. 21, 1939, she was the daughter of Ethel (Alford) Rivers Pomeroy, and Harry Rivers.

Sylvia enjoyed playing canasta and bingo with her friends at the Greenwood. She is well known for knitting sweaters for family and friends, and gifting them along with her favorite video, “Indescribable,” by Louie Giglio. Sylvia also enjoyed camping, hiking, and horseback riding. She was an avid lover of horses, owning and operating a business that offered sleigh and carriage rides in Lake Placid in the ’70s and early ’80s. Sylvia also owned and operated her own stable in upper Averyville, offering horse back riding. Sylvia was honored to be showcased with her horse and sleigh on the video for the opening ceremonies during the 1980 Winter Olympics.

Until her retirement, Sylvia also worked at Ruth’s Diner for many years, and Mama Lena’s.

She is survived by her three daughters and one son: Kathie (Sawyer) Aiken and husband Tim Aiken of Washington, Laurie (Sawyer) Simpson of Lake Placid, Stanley J. Sawyer Jr. of Lake Placid and Jean (Sawyer) Warner and husband Mike Warner of Saranac Lake; nine grandchildren: Ken Katsuta and Teisha Aiken of Washington, Kyle Simpson of Saranac Lake, Deona Warner of Greenwich, Kara Warner of Saranac Lake, Ivan Warner of Massachusetts, and Johnathan Warner of Saranac Lake; five great-grandchildren: Malaki and Jerimiah Katsuta of Washington, Payton Bomyea of Saranac Lake, Junior Aiken of Washington, and Landon Warner of Saranac Lake, one to be born in February and one to be born in May; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Sylvia was predeceased by her two brothers: Glenn Rivers and Lawrence Rivers, and her mother Ethel (Alford) Rivers Pomeroy.

Calling Hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16 at the M. B. Clark Inc. Funeral Home in Lake Placid. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 17 at the Lake Placid Baptist Church, Saranac Avenue, Lake Placid. The Rev. Jim Koenig will officiate. Burial will follow at North Elba Cemetery.
