Snowmobilers and injured hikers rescued

State Department of Environmental Conservation forest rangers rescued snowmobilers in three separate incidents last week, and also helped several lost and injured people in the Adirondacks.

Town of Indian Lake

Shortly before 3 p.m. on Friday, March 16, forest rangers, along with environmental conservation officers [ECOs] and local EMS, responded to the scene of a snowmobile crash on the Blue Mountain Trail in Indian Lake.

Rangers and EMS packaged the 62-year-old woman and transported her to a waiting ambulance, but the severity of her injuries resulted in a helicopter airlift to Albany Medical Center.

Town of Edinburg

In the evening on Friday, March 16, forest ranger Andrew Lewis responded to a snowmobile accident on South Shore Road in Saratoga County. Additional rangers ad Edinburg EMS responded to the scene, where a man had suffered a possible fractured leg.

The man was packaged and transported to the road, where a waiting ambulance transported him to Saratoga Hospital for treatment.

Town of Brighton

Just before 10 p.m. on Friday, March, 16, DEC dispatch in Ray Brook received notification of a missing skier on St. Regis Mountain near Paul Smith’s College. The 20-year-old from Lake Placid was overdue, and his skiing partner notified DEC.

Forest rangers responded and two began tracking the man in the woods, while one ranger stayed on the road. At 11:35 p.m., the missing man came out on the road and was picked up by a ranger, and was reunited with his skiing partner.

Town of Brighton

At 9:48 p.m. on Saturday, March 17, rangers responded to the scene of a snowmobile accident where the 61-year-old Saranac Lake operator had crashed and become stuck in a small stream. The man did not have the proper gear for the weather conditions.

GPS coordinates from the man’s cell phone put him on a trail about two miles from the road. One ranger hiked in and another went in on a snowmobile and they located the man at 10:46 a.m. He was suffering from numerous health issues, including a pre-existing condition that required ambulance transport to Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

Town of North Elba

Just before noon on Sunday, March 18, rangers responded to McKenzie Mountain, where a 17-year-old male had injured his arm after falling on a steep, icy section of trail.

Six rangers responded via the Jackrabbit Trail from Whiteface Inn Road and located the subject and his hiking partner just after 1 p.m. Rangers stabilized the injury and transported the pair off the mountain to a waiting Lake Placid EMS ambulance. The boy was taken to Lake Placid Hospital for further treatment.
