Ice shanties must be removed today
The state Department of Environmental Conservation is reminding anglers that all ice shanties must be removed from lakes and ponds no later than today.
DEC regulations require that shanties be removed from all waters by March 15 each year, as the spring thaw can result in the small buildings used in ice fishing to fall through the ice. The shanties can then become a hazard to navigation.
Ice shanties must also be clearly labeled on the exterior with the name and address of the owner in letter at least three inches high.
