Olympic Training Center offers shelter during tonight’s power outage in Lake Placid
LAKE PLACID — The Olympic Training Center will be open tonight for anyone who needs to stay warm during a scheduled power outage from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
The center, located at 196 Old Military Road, will distribute blankets and pillows, and people will be able to access the internet as well. Pets are welcome as well.
The emergency room at the Lake Placid Health Center, in the former Placid Memorial Hospital at 29 Church St., will also be open for anyone in need of medical assistance.
Electric heat is common in Lake Placid homes because power rates are relatively inexpensive, due to the village’s municipal electric department. That means many people will be without heat overnight, when the temperature in Lake Placid is forecast to reach a low of 26 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
The nine-hour outage permits National Grid to fix a switch and exchange two poles on the 115-kilovolt transmission line that feeds electricity to the village, running along the railroad tracks from Saranac Lake. The repairs are being done to prevent future involuntary outages produced by faulty equipment, as happened twice this past year in Lake Placid: in February and June.
