DEC closes Prospect Mountain road

LAKE GEORGE — The state Department of Environmental Conservation announced late last week that it was closing the Prospect Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway for the season.

The 5.5-mile road closes for the winter due to ice and snow, but the public can expect it to reopen in the spring. The road offers three scenic lookouts on its way to the 2,030-foot summit. There is also a shuttle that runs during the open season.

Hikers can take a 1.5-mile trail from the village of Lake George to the summit, or drivers can explore a self-guided nature trail at the top of the mountain. There are also picnic facilities and remnants of the world’s largest cable railroad at the top.

The DEC said in a press release that the cost for cars next spring will be $10 or $5 for motorcycles.
