Rangers rescue injured and lost people

State Department of Environmental Conservation forest rangers assisted numerous people in the backcountry who were lost or suffering from injuries, as well as coordinating a search that led to the discovery of a missing volunteer.

Town of Bolton

A 40-year-old man called Warren County 911 just before 8 p.m. on Monday, June 12, to report that he was lost between Cat and Thomas mountains. The man was able to provide GPS coordinates of his location.

Two rangers responded and began up the trail. In the mean time, the man joined with another hiking party and eventually met up with the rangers. The man was in good health, and rangers escorted the group to the trailhead.

Town of Thurman

On June 12, state police contacted the forest rangers to request help in locating a 69-year-old man who had gone missing from Americade in Lake George.

The next day, rangers, state police and environmental conservation officers located the deceased man off a lightly traveled road.

Town of North Elba

On Thursday, June 15, a 27-year-old man from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, reported that he had a possible fractured ankle near the Lake Colden Outpost.

New York State Police aviation inserted two rangers at the outpost. Rangers Megan McCone and Jim Giglinto rowed across Lake Colden in a row boat and assessed the man.

He was stabilized and loaded into the row boat for transport back to the helicopter landing zone at the outpost. The man was then flown to Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake for treatment.

Town of Schroon

Just before 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, Essex County 911 notified DEC dispatch in Ray Brook that a family of five was lost on Bear Mountain in Schroon Lake. The father and his four children, all under the age of 14, had become lost while descending the trail.

Two rangers responded and located the family, and then escorted them down to the Pyramid Lake Camp, where they were reunited with the rest of the family.

Town of Keene

A 45-year-old man was complaining of dehydration and a possible knee injury when he called Essex County 911 on Saturday, June 17.

Three rangers and an assistant ranger responded to the trailhead and hiked in about a mile to the man’s location. The man rehydrated and was able to walk out on his own to a waiting ambulance. He was taken to Elizabethtown Hospital for treatment.

Town of Ticonderoga

A 10-year-old boy was reported missing in the Pharaoh Lakes Wilderness on June 17. The boy had become separated from his party when the group of 10 split into two groups.

Rangers spearheaded the search effort, which included local law enforcement, NYS police and aviation, and state police SORT team. Despite searching through the night, the boy was not located.

The next morning, nearly two dozen rangers were on location, and the boy was found in good health shortly before 9 a.m. and was reunited with his family after a medical evaluation.
