LAKE PLACID — Less than a week after the Tri-Lakes region lost bobsledding legend Steven Holcomb to an untimely death at the Olympic Training Center and a man and a woman to a murder-suicide in Tupper Lake, the Olympic Village Friday lost a 20-year-old woman to a boating accident on Lake Placid lake.

Saige Borden, of Lake Placid, was pronounced dead at 11:55 a.m. Friday at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, where she was taken after a canoe she was in capsized, according to state police Public Information Officer Jennifer Fleishman.

Fleishman said Borden was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the apparent drowning accident, and there were no life jackets in the canoe. Two other people in the boat also fell in the water, but they were able to get to shore safely and suffered no injuries. The survivors’ names were not released.

Franklin County Coroner Ron Keough said an autopsy is scheduled for today at AMC-Saranac Lake.

Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department Head Driver Matt Colby said the firehouse received a call at 5:51 a.m. of two people in distress in the water of Lake Placid near Camp Gordon on the east short of the lake, off Ruisseaumont Way. They responded with two boats and 16 members.

When firefighters arrived, Colby said they discovered an overturned canoe submerged in water approximately 100 yards from shore, although firefighters weren’t sure exactly where the canoe had capsized.

Firefighters were soon advised that two subjects — a man and woman — were out of the water, but there were actually three friends involved in the accident. Colby said the man who made it ashore called 911, adding that the caretaker of the camp had also tried to jump in the water to save Borden.

Firefighters attempted CPR and found no pulse, and they subsequently transported Borden approximately an eighth of a mile down the lake by fire boat to an awaiting ambulance at the state boat launch, where the fire department’s boathouse is located. The ambulance then transported her to Saranac Lake.

State police added that the investigation is still ongoing.

Borden, the daughter of Rob and Suzanne Borden, graduated from the Lake Placid High School in 2015. Her Facebook page states that she studied at North Country Community College and worked as a server at Mis Amigos restaurant in Lake Placid. Her family is currently renovating their soon-to-open restaurant — Lobster Reef — at 2413 Main St. between Just Bead It and Ruthie’s Run. The culinary team, featured on www.finerestaurantfinder.com, lists the entire family: Chef Rob Borden, Suzanne Borden, Saige Borden and Remi Borden, Saige’s younger brother.

Shortly after her death, Saige’s Facebook page began filling up with tributes from friends.

“I won’t ever be able to look at the house across the street the same way again,” wrote Joe Currie. “Saige Borden, I will miss our almost daily smile and wave. I will miss hearing you yell at your dogs to stop barking when eden decides she wants to come visit. I never thought last nights wave would be the last. We will celebrate your life and cherish we will cherish every memory.”

Rob Borden’s Facebook page also began to fill with condolences Friday afternoon. He even posted a one-sentence tribute to his daughter.

“I lost my best friend my love my daughter,” he wrote.

Even though Saige graduated two years ago, Lake Placid Central School District Superintendent Roger Catania expects that staff and students who knew her may need some help with the grieving process.

“We are all very saddened to hear today’s news about Saige,” Catania wrote in an email Friday. “She and her family have been a part of our school community for many years. We will have counselors and other caring adults ready to offer support to students and staff on Monday morning. My heart goes out to her family during this very difficult time.”

Friends gathered at the ‘dack Shack in Lake Placid at 9:30 p.m. Friday for a memorial balloon release, walking to the Peninsula Trails nearby and releasing dozens of balloons when they reached Lake Placid lake.
