Snowmobiler, trooper fall through ice in Long Lake

A snowmobiler and state trooper fell through the ice on Long Lake Friday morning and were rescued, treated and released, according to state police.

Around 8:50 a.m., state police based in Tupper Lake and Indian Lake responded to a call for a snowmobiler who fell through the ice at the southern end of Long Lake, according to a state police press release.

Once on the scene, Tupper Lake-based Trooper Michael Kohan responded to the area of state Route 28N and Van Hussen Drive, and then located the partially submerged man in the lake, 61-year-old Michael Michna of North Brunswick, New Jersey. Another snowmobiler, whose name police did not release, was on the ice blowing a whistle, according to Schroon Lake-based state police Sgt. Michael Mullaney, and that is how Kohan found Michna.

Kohan was walking on the ice toward Michna when he fell through the ice about 150 feet from shore. He was unable to lift himself back out of the water. Trooper Roger Lind and members of the Long Lake Volunteer Fire Department and Long Lake Volunteer Rescue Squad arrived on scene and were able to pull Kohan from the water. They also rescued Michna.

The rescue squad transported Michna to the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, where he was treated and released. Kohan, who was in the water for approximately seven minutes, was treated at the scene for exposure to the freezing water and a small cut.

Also responding were a state Department of Environmental Conservation forest ranger and the Blue Mountain Lake Volunteer Fire Department, according to the Long Lake Volunteer Department Facebook page.
