Plowing for Palace

Dean Baker, right, head of the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Ice Palace building team, watches Saturday as Michael Knapp plows snow off of Pontiac Bay, where ice blocks for the palace are cut each year. The ice was 8 inches thick at the center of the bay, and 8.5 inches thick at the edges, when the picture was taken. Builders typically wait for 12 inches of ice before starting construction of the palace.
