Paul Smiths: Cuomo proposal would affect recruitment

A day after Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced his proposal to cover tuition costs at state colleges for hundreds of thousands of middle- and low-income New Yorkers, the chief marketing officer at Paul Smith’s College elaborated on how the proposal would affect the private college.

Shannon Oborne said the governor’s proposal to provide free tuition to some students who have been accepted to a state or city university in New York would “have a real impact on our recruitment.”

“A significant majority of (Paul Smith’s) students are exactly the types of students that would be attracted to public colleges under this program,” Oborne said.

The proposed free tuition, in the form of the new Excelsior Scholarship, would be available for students coming from homes with household incomes of $125,000 or less a year.

Oborne said she misspoke Tuesday when she initially said the proposal would have minimal impact on Paul Smith’s recruiting.

Starting at $19.00/week.
