Man dead after wild standoff with state police in Saranac

SARANAC (AP) — Authorities say a man is dead following a standoff with state police in northern New York that included multiple gunshots, an explosion and a house fire.

Troopers were dispatched to a home in Saranac around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday following reports that 60-year-old Franklyn Miller barricaded himself inside.

After attempts to get Miller to surrender failed throughout the night, state police approached his Lake Serenity Road home at about 6 a.m. Thursday.

Miller greeted troopers with a shotgun, which state police say he fired at a gas can on the front porch. The can exploded, igniting a blaze at the home.

State police say Miller continued to fire shots as the house burned. He was found dead inside the residence after firefighters extinguished the flames.

An autopsy is scheduled for today.
