Mirror Lake Inn employees help others for the holidays

LAKE PLACID — The employees of the Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa took time away from the specter of a busy holiday this month to ensure that others have a joyous Christmas.

Over the decades, the staff at the Inn has worked wonders making sure its guests feel at home in this most blessed time of the year. Decorations, lights, fireplaces, presents, it all creates an ambiance that brings guests back each year.

“But there’s more to it than that,” said General Manager Carl Gronlund. “All of us who work here and enjoy these holiday surroundings know the importance of Christmas in our own homes. We’re also aware of the people, especially children, who may not be so fortunate. It’s in that spirit that our employees took it upon themselves a few years ago to begin organizing an employee Christmas party here at the Inn during which they collect donations of toys and clothing for the North Elba Community Christmas Fund. It has become an annual event that the staff looks forward to and the number of donations just seems to get bigger and bigger each year. We even have some long-time guests of the hotel that make it a point to contact the staff and make a donation to the event each year.”

The community fund employee collections occur shortly after the Inn hosts Joy to the Children in early December. This annual holiday gala brings together more than 500 community members and guests to help raise funds which benefit the children’s programs at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts.

A week later, the staff turns its attention to helping North Elba families. For the past four years, workers have brought presents to the Inn in December, which in turn, are delivered to the town for holiday distribution.

“Doing this benefits others,” Gronlund said. “It’s a little bit that means a lot, and is a true testament to the staff. They really enjoy knowing that they’re helping families in and around our community have a better Christmas and putting smiles on children’s faces.”
