McCormick wins Franklin clerk/tax collector race

FRANKLIN — Republican Amy McCormick won election over Democrat Veronica LeFebvre in the town of Franklin’s clerk/tax collector race, according to unofficial election night totals.

McCormick took 312 votes, or 65.27%. LeFebvre took 166 votes, or 34.73% of the total.

Longtime town clerk Lauren LeFebvre announced she was not seeking reelection after 30 years in the town government in July. Veronica is her daughter. Lauren resigned from the clerk/tax collector position last week, citing conflicts with the town board.

Town Supervisor Dot Brown told the Enterprise the board intends to appoint McCormick to the position soon, instead of waiting until January to fill the now-vacant position. McCormick would serve as an appointee until she is sworn in to her official term in January.

There is a 146-vote gap between LeFebvre and McCormick based on election night vote totals, which include mail-in ballots received before Election Day.

There were 35 mail-in ballots issued to Franklin voters, most of which have been returned and are already included in the vote total. There remain eight not received or counted on election night — not enough to overcome that gap.

Absentee ballots will be counted on Nov. 12, the final day for them to arrive at the board of elections, according to Franklin County Republican Election Commissioner Tracy Sparks.

Because of a new state law shifting most of the elections in odd-numbered years to even-numbered years, the seats won Tuesday night will only last for three years instead of four.

Even-year elections would start next year. Because of this, four-year terms elected this year will only get a three-year term and two-year terms will only get a one-year term.

Starting at $3.92/week.
