Lake Placid beats rival SL to kick off its CVAC season

RAY BROOK — The Lake Placid golf team started its Champlain Valley Athletic Conference season on a winning note with a 6-0 victory over Saranac Lake Wednesday on the Red Storm’s home course at the Saranac Lake Golf Club in Ray Brook.

Five of the Blue Bombers fired rounds in the 40s on the way to winning all six contested matches.

Junior Jack Armstrong earned medalist honors with a 41 on the par-36 layout. Playing in the top spot, Armstrong defeated Saranac Lake’s Noah Munn, who carded a 54. Armstrong’s round was highlighted by a chip-in birdie on the par-3, fourth hole.

Brady Trembley had the next-lowest round of the day, a 42, on the way to defeating Evan Hochwald, who shot a 53 competing in the second pairing.

Drew Ferebee, Chris Byrne, Grady Draper and Alex Wright also picked up wins for the Blue Bombers, who are 2-0 overall. The team’s first win was against Section X’s Tupper Lake in a non-league match a week ago.

Kaleb Mitchell’s 47 was the low round for Saranac Lake and came in the fourth pairing where he lost to Draper by three strokes.

The closest match of the day was between each team’s fourth golfer, which saw Byrne edge the Red Storm’s Carson Ryan 46-48.

Saranac Lake dropped to 0-2 with the setback and next plays Monday at Ticonderoga. Lake Placid also takes on the Sentinels today at Craig Wood.
