Land Rover Discovery: Updated for 2019

The 2019 Land Rover Discovery blends a new exterior design with a versatile interior capable of seating up to seven adults comfortably in three rows with usable space for gear, resulting in a revolutionary “go anywhere, do anything” vehicle that brings new levels of capability and versatility to the Discovery stable.

OVERVIEW

The 2019 model remains unmistakably a Discovery despite its very different appearance. Surfaces are more sophisticated and proportions have been optimized, blended with appealing detailing and precision manufacturing, creating a highly capable SUV with more emotion.

EVOCATIVE DESIGN INSIDE AND OUT

Outside, the previous distinctive roofline remains, providing the ideal solution to practical interior spacing. Up front, sculpted surfaces, jewel-like headlamps, and raked windshield deviate from tradition, with the daytime running lamps delivering a distinctive new light signature.

From the side, styling proportions showcase Discovery Sport-like wheel arches, visually locking them to the bodywork with smooth contours for a planted effect.

Aft, the lamps emphasize a horizontal theme, and the tailgate is now a one-piece unit for a sportier look. The gate opening is larger for easier loading and unloading and incorporates a streamlined spoiler lip.

Moving into the cabin, the central infotainment and climate control panels are intersected by a strong clean vertical pillar, and the console features simplified switchgear designed to be intuitive, reducing driver distraction.

DISCOVERY’S POWER SOURCES

Two engines are on hand to power the Discovery, available in all trim levels and seating configurations, starting with a 254-horsepower 3.0-liter TD6 diesel with 443 lb.-ft. of torque, and a 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 gasoline engine that produces 340 horsepower along with 332 lb.-ft. of torque. Both engines route energy to the all-wheel-drive system with a twin-speed transfer case via an eight-speed ZF automatic with rotary controller and steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. A single-speed transfer case with Torsen differential is available without a low-range gearbox.

AS TESTED

The model range consists of SE, HSE, and HSE Luxury, with optional Black Design Packages available for all. My tester was the HSE Luxury with three-row, seven-seat configuration powered by the 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 gas engine. The tester’s base price was $66,800. Starting price for the lineup begins at $52,950.

PERFORMANCE

Land Rover’s Discovery is a comfortable and reliable on-road performer that excels in its off-road performance capability thanks to the innovative All-Terrain Progress Control, Terrain Response 2 Auto, and Four-Corner Air suspension. Additional all-terrain technologies include hill descent control, gradient release control, electronic traction control, and roll stability control.

An optional Advanced Tow Assist package boosts the Discovery’s towing capacity up to 8,201 pounds. Ride quality is comfortable regardless of the terrain’s surface and the handling characteristics are comparable to those of a sport sedan. Adding to confidence-building security are several cutting-edge driver assist technologies including the most anticipated features.

CREATURE COMFORTS AND CONVENIENCES

Storage spaces abound in the Land Rover Discovery and there are six 12-volt and up to seven USB charging points. Heated seats are available in front, middle, and third rows, with a total of four ISOFIX mounting points for child safety seats. Up front, heated and cooled seats with a massage function and 16-way adjustments are available.

An optional new Intelligent Seat Fold function allows reconfiguration of second- and third-row seats using switches inside the tailgate, on the C-pillar, via the infotainment touchscreen, or remotely using a smartphone.

A powered “Inner Tailgate” has an additional fold-down section that deploys when the tailgate is opened, and is capable of supporting a maximum load of 661.4 pounds.

Land Rover’s InControl Touch Pro system takes care of the new Discovery’s infotainment and connectivity features, with access to an extended range of apps through its high-resolution touchscreen display. Bluetooth comes standard through the range and allows the use of selected apps via smartphones. WiFi for up to eight personal devices is included, with Android Auto and Apple smartphone and watch compatibility, as well.

THE FINAL ANALYSIS

The 2019 Land Rover Discovery is a superlative vehicle for short- or long-distance travel on or off road, delivering Land Rover’s legendary prowess for adventure. It has progressed in revolutionary fashion and is likely to rank as a favorite Land Rover model, now void of a boxy image and showcasing a sporty persona.
