WINTERBERG, Germany — After a weeklong break, the World Cup tour is set to resume in Winterberg this Friday through Sunday for its first European race of the season.

Team USA took two of the three women’s bobsled medals during the last World Cup in Whistler, Canada, and Jamie Greubel Poser and Elana Meyers Taylor, who took silver and bronze, respectively, will seek podium finishes once again. Greubel Poser is expected to race on Saturday with Aja Evans, while Meyers Taylor will team with Lauren Gibbs.

Greubel Poser and Meyers Taylor currently rank second and third, respectively, in the 2017-2018 International Bobsled and Skeleton Federation overall standings, and are looking to overtake points leader Kallie Humphries of Canada.

Brittany Reinbolt, who finished 12th in Whistler and ranks sixth overall, is set to race with Maureen Ajoku in the first World Cup race of Ajoku’s career. The competition combinations are subject to change, however, due to sled availability.

Codie Bascue, of Whitehall, has had a breakout season so far, piloting his sleds to three medals in the first three two-man and four-man races of the season. In Saturday’s two-man competition, Carlo Valdes will push for the 23-year-old pilot, while Sam McGuffie and Nate Weber will join Bascue and Valdes in four-man on Sunday. Bascue is currently ranked fifth overall in four-man and sixth overall in two-man.

Two-time Olympian Nick Cunningham currently holds the fourth overall ranking in two-man, and will team with Hakeem Abdul-Saboor, who makes his first World Cup appearance this season after earning a spot on the national team. Cunningham and Abdul-Saboor paired for gold in one of the two-man races in last week’s Park City, Utah North American Cup races. Sam Michener and Chris Kinney will round out Cunningham’s four-man team.

Olympic gold medalist Justin Olsen and brakeman Evan Weinstock will team up in two-man for the first time since taking bronze in the season-opening Lake Placid World Cup. Olympic medalists Steve Langton and Chris Fogt will race with Olsen and Weinstock in four-man. Olsen currently sits in seventh, just behind Bascue, in the two-man overall rankings.

Team USA skeleton athletes will seek their first World Cup medal of the season in Winterberg. The women’s team has been led by three-time Olympian Katie Uhlaender, who has a World Cup gold medal on the Winterberg track from the 2006-2007 season. Kendall Wesenberg and Savannah Graybill will also race for the women. Wesenberg won silver in Winterberg in the 2014-2015 European Cup race, while it is Graybill’s first time competing on the track.

On the men’s side, Matt Antoine has finished in the top 10 in two of three races thus far this season, and leads Team USA in points, sitting in seventh in the overall rankings. Greg West and John Daly will also compete for the U.S.

German ski racer dies from injuries at Lake Louise

LAKE LOUISE, Alberta (AP) — A 17-year-old ski racer from a club in Germany has died after he was seriously injured during a NorAm event at Lake Louise.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said the racer lost control during a run Tuesday afternoon and died Wednesday in a Calgary hospital.

Officials from Skiclub Partenkirchen in Germany confirmed Max Burkhart was a member of the club and was badly injured.

EMS crews and doctors at the resort treated the teen at the scene and he was flown to Calgary by air ambulance. A teammate told CTV News that Burkhart attended school in the United States and was not travelling with the team.
