Storm boys, Bomber girls ski to first place

NORTH CREEK — Section VII Nordic skiers had a dominant day at the Queensbury Nordic Relay, held on Saturday at the North Creek Ski Bowl, as the Saranac Lake boys took home the top spot, while the Lake Placid girls finished atop their podium.
The classic technique race featured a three-person relay format, with a total of seven high schools splitting their rosters into three-person teams. Each skier raced 3K, for a total of 9K per team.
In the boys race, the Saranac Lake teams finished in first and third place, with rival Queensbury in second.
The Red Storm’s A-team, made up of Mason Stoddard, Liam Stodard and Emmett VanBuskirk, claimed the top spot in a time of 26 minutes, 15 seconds, roughly 20 seconds ahead of Queensbury.
Saranac Lake’s B-team, comprised of Keaton Daley, Ebin Meissner and Ben Ziemann, finished in a time of 26:55 for third place. Lake Placid’s top finishers were Will Preece, Connor Mannion and Will Coffrin, placing sixth in 28:25.

On the girls side, it was a Section VII sweep, with Lake Placid’s Leila Fey, Norah Francis and Holly Erenstone taking the win in a time of 30:05. Saranac Lake claimed the next two spots, with the Red Storm’s A-team, made up of Tyler Burth, Kelsi Burth and Kaylee Holmes, finishing in second in a time of 30:51. Saranac Lake’s B-team, featuring Cadence Kennedy, Pepper Laxson and Lila Zobel, was not far behind in a time of 31:18.
Section VII Nordic will be off this week for winter break. The next local race will be held Tuesday, Jan. 6 at Dewey Mountain, before the section welcomes skiers from around the state to the Section VII Invitational at Mount Van Hoevenberg on Saturday, Jan. 10.
