SARANAC LAKE — Brisa Brunette connected on the game-winning goal in the second sudden-death overtime on Wednesday to give the Saranac Lake girls soccer team a 2-1 home victory over the Moriah Vikings.
Brunette scored after getting a foot on the ball in front of the net, following a pass from teammate Ashlyn Tomaszewski, who beat out her defender and put the ball on goal, less than four minutes into overtime.
With the win, the Red Storm snapped a seven-game winless streak, while improving to 3-6-2 overall. Saranac Lake’s head coach, Jason Wamsganz, said it was a great team win.
“I was pleased with every phase of the game,” he said. “We moved the ball well and moved off the ball well; it opened players up and we played very unselfishly. We really need to capitalize on chances; we had a lot of great opportunities and didn’t finish the way that we needed to. They’ll work at it and we’ll do better.”
Brunette also scored the first goal of the game after taking a cross pass from Layne Locke less than eight minutes into the game. But after holding the Vikings scoreless through most of the contest, Moriah’s top goal scorer, Alexis Mascarenas, broke through after carrying the ball across the 18 and shooting.

Saranac Lake’s Kelsi Burth had defended Alexis Mascarenas all evening, and Wamsganz was proud of how Burth guarded her.
“She’s a good player, and Kelsi really limited her chances,” he said. “Our defense played well in support.”
The Red Storm finished with a 13-11 advantage in shots. Saranac Lake’s goalie Emma Akey recorded 10 saves en route to the win, while the Vikings’ Sophia Taylor had 11.
Up next, the Red Storm will host the Boquet Valley Griffins at 4:30 p.m. today.
“They are a good team and Claire Reynolds is a really talented player,” Wamsganz said. “We’ll have to limit her chances and ability to set up a play for her teammates. It will definitely be a challenge for us.”
