LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid boys soccer team found out how difficult it is to win three games against a single opponent.

On Thursday, the Blue Bombers’ season came to an end after falling to the Seton Catholic Knights 4-2. at home in the Section VII, Class D quarterfinal round. The Knights, who had lost to Lake Placid twice during the regular season, used a strong second half to advance to the next round.

Seton Catholic’s Leandro Vander Laan netted two goals and added an assist. Henry Church also found the back of the net twice for the winners, while Oliver Church chipped in with an assist.

Sean McCauley and Trey Mariano each scored for Lake Placid, which ended its season with a 7-7-1 record overall. Jackson Hays and Caleb Wylie added assists for the hosts.

Having beaten the Knights eight days prior, the Blue Bombers got off to a solid start as McCauley took a pass from Hays and buried a shot with around nine minutes left in the opening half.

However, right before the intermission, Vander Laan evened the contest after his shot hit the crossbar and landed in the back of the net. And less than one minute into the second half, Vander Laan gave his team a 2-1 lead after netting a shot from in close.

Mariano, a junior, responded around nine minutes later, when he collected Wylie’s pass and sent it in the low right-hand corner to even the game at 2-2.

While the Blue Bombers maintained some solid pressure, it didn’t last long as Henry Church netted Vander Laan’s cross pass with less than seven minutes left in regulation for the eventual game-winner. A couple of minutes later, Henry Church capped off the game with a shot from inside the box.

The Blue Bombers finished with a 13-11 advantage in shots as Seton Catholic’s Michael Riccardelli recorded nine saves. Oren Preston had six stops in net for Lake Placid.

With the win, the Knights (5-7-1 overall) advance to the Section VII, Class D semifinal game, where they will take on the perennial powerhouse Chazy Eagles, which topped Indian Lake/Long Lake 8-0 in their quarterfinal game on Thursday. The Eagles (17-1 overall) have won 16 of the last 17 sectional titles, including the last eight. They’ve given up just three goals all season.
