Saranac Lake girls top the Vikings, 2-1

SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake girls soccer team is off to a pretty solid start this season, and on Tuesday the team continued its early success. The Red Storm defeated the reigning Section VII, Class C champion, Moriah Vikings, 2-1 on the road.

With the game tied 1-1, Saranac Lake’s Maggie Reynolds netted a goal with 11:14 left in the second half to secure the win. Brisa Brunette also scored for the Red Storm, while Anika Wamsganz and Tyler Burth each chipped in with an assist.

Saranac Lake’s head coach, Jason Wamsganz, said his team played well in the first half and generated chances while moving the ball well.

“(In) the second half, Moriah won the majority of the 50-50 balls and they were beating us to the point of attack,” he said. “They outshot us, but we made them take many of those shots from outside the 18. Moriah played well enough in the second half to win that game. We had a few chances, and we were fortunate enough to score one of them.”

Following Brunette’s goal in the first half, Moriah’s Emma Harrington evened the contest around the midway point of the second half. Reynolds scored the eventual game-winner a few minutes later. The Vikings outshot the Red Storm 18-11.

Moriah’s goalkeeper, Sophia Taylor, had eight saves, while Saranac Lake’s goalie Emma Akey, who Wamsganz said was on a different level Tuesday, had 12 saves.

“She was the difference-maker. We moved Kelsi Burth to play on Alexis Mascerenas and Kelsi did a really nice job,” he said. “It’s important to win games like we did tonight, ones where you outplay the opponent at times and get outplayed at times. The objective is to win, and sometimes things don’t go exactly how you want them to go, but if you achieve the objective in an alternate way, you can take away positives from it. In the end, we took a step forward and I think we will gain some confidence. Moriah is a solid team, so to come away with a win at their place is extremely important.”

The Red Storm, which improved to 2-0-1, will face the Boquet Valley Griffins on the road at 4:30 p.m. today.
