Rollerski events set for this weekend
LAKE PLACID As the leaves start to change colors, the New York Ski Educational Foundation is gearing up for a busy fall.
This weekend, Olympians will take part in the Keys to the Castle Court at Mount Van Hoevenberg on Saturday, and the Climb to the Castle at the Whiteface Mountain Veteran’s Memorial Tollroad on Sunday.
The Olympians include Jesse Diggins, Ben Ogden, and Julia Kern, and they will compete in rollerskiing races as part of the New England Nordic Ski Association’s annual rollerski calendar. Action will start at 8 a.m. both days.
Diggins, the 2018 Olympic Silver Medalist, and her SMS T2 teammates Ogden and Kern, will challenge themselves on the Climb to the Castle’s 5-mile course, gaining 2300 feet of elevation to the summit of New York’s fifth-tallest peak.
This year’s race will mark the 18th edition of the Climb to the Castle. The event aims to draw aspiring young athletes from across New England and New York. The series begins annually in Craftsbury, Vermont, in July with the Lost Nation Roll and moves to New York this month. There will be an October stop at Mount Mansfield in Vermont and the series will conclude in early November with the Mount Greylock Hill Climb in Lanesborough, Massachusetts.
Other events this Fall include Flaming Leaves at the Olympic Jumping Complex from Oct. 9 to 12 and the Lake Placid Ski Club/NYSEF Ski Swap at the Lake Placid Elementary School on Nov. 8.
