Red Storm girls soccer falls in OT
SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake girls soccer team suffered a 1-0 overtime loss to the AuSable Valley Patriots on Monday evening at the new Wilson-Raymond Field.
AuSable Valley’s Lauryn Saltus-Paul netted the game-winner with 7 minutes, 13 seconds left in overtime.
“It was a disappointing loss,” Red Storm head coach Jason Wamsganz said. “We felt that we made enough plays early and down the stretch to be in a position to win, but that wasn’t the case tonight. We are struggling to score off our chances. We have to start scoring, we can’t keep relying on our defense and goalie to keep us in games.
Saranac Lake’s goalie Emma Akey recorded seven saves, while the Patriots goalie Lula Pfendler had eight. The Red Storm outshout their opponents 9-8.
“We just have to be hungry to finish plays,” Wamsganz said. “I felt that we got beat to the ball tonight more than we have yet this season. We played slowly and bunched. They did a good job of keeping us bunched, and when we transitioned to offense, we stayed compact and we made their job easier in defending us. We still generated offensive chances, so we are at least getting looks. That’s the first part; now we need to clean up the second part. Transition defense still haunts us; it’s not for a lack of hustle, we just lose people in our own end when the other team transitions quickly.”
Up next, Saranac Lake will face the Ticonderoga Sentinels on the road at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
“They are always physical and tough at home,” Wamsganz said. “We need to get some things figured out quickly. This is a good team, just not confident in their scoring right now. We have the players who can score; they just need to start believing.”
