SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake girls soccer team found itself in a defensive battle against the Chazy Eagles Monday evening. However, an Eagles goal late in the second half was just enough to spoil the night.
Playing under the lights at the new Wilson-Raymond Field, Chazy scored a goal in each half, securing a 2-1 victory over the Red Storm.
The Eagles’ Gwyn Compeau scored the game-winner on a pass from Kendall LaBombard with a little more than two minutes remaining in the second half to break up the 1-1 tie. The win pushed Chazy’s record to 5-3 overall.
Saranac Lake finished with a 6-5 edge in shots, and Red Storm coach Jason Wamsgamz said it was a defensive game, and his team just couldn’t convert on its limited chances.
“We got off to a good start and possessed the ball and created some early chances, but we were just not connecting on the final pass, so we left some chances open and they cleared the ball on us,” he said. “Credit to their defense in their third.”

After nearly 30 minutes of scoreless action, Chazy finally broke through with a goal from Marin Juneau late in the first half. Saranac Lake had few offensive chances toward the end of the opening half, but came up short.
“We have some things we need to clean up and get our forwards to move without the ball,” Wamsaganz said. “As forwards, we watched the ball tonight and were late to the mesh point all night long. Maggie Reynolds was the exception; she attacked the ball and made some nice plays.”
While trailing 1-0, Reynolds, a freshman, connected on an assist from Kelsi Burth to even the game at 1-1 around the midway point of the second half.
“Kelsi Burth had a strong game, and Ellie Willett gave us an offensive spark,” Wamsganz said. “There was a lot of play in the neutral area, and I felt like we did a good job most of the time. Winning first and second contact has to be a priority for us, as does not kicking the ball to the other team. We have to find the feet of our teammates and limit the 50-50 ball when we are in control of the ball.”
Chazy’s goalkeeper, Calleigh Clark, had a standout performance, recording four saves, while Saranac Lake’s Emma Akey was also solid with three stops.
Up next, the Red Storm, which dropped to 2-2-1, will take on Lake Placid on the road at 4:30 p.m. today. The Blue Bombers are currently 3-4 overall.
