Wilmington bike races draw nearly 500 people

WILMINGTON — Nearly 500 people converged on Wilmington this past weekend for the first of two days of bicycling race action.

The weekend started with the Whiteface Mountain Uphill Bike and Foot races on Saturday, before wrapping up with the Wilmington Whiteface 100K and 50K bike race on Sunday.

Saturday’s event featured 236 participants — 184 in the bike race and 52 in the foot race. Garrett Wagner of Webster won the bike race in 44 minutes, 26 seconds. Bennett Rose of Scarsdale was second in 45:47, and Jeremy Scheid of Newton, New Jersey was third in 46:59.

Kristen Kulchinsky of Dix Hills won the women’s bike race in 47:12, followed by Williston, Vermont’s Jane Vigneau in 59:34 for second place. Conway, New Hampshire native Christine Pliquin (1:02.01) was third overall.

Justin Scheid of Succasunna, New Jersey won the foot race in 1:01.20. He was followed by Ottawa, Ontario’s Andrew Beardsall (1:12.15) in second and Westport’s Michael Bodner (1:15.59) in third.

Camille Hamm of Ottawa, Ontario, won the women’s footrace in 1:18.01, while Lake Placid native Elizabeth Izzo (1:21.26) was second. Bryce Hopper of Syracuse was third in 1:25.12.

On Sunday, there were 155 bike racers in the 100K and 86 in the 50K. Bobby Lea of Alburtis, Pennsylvania, narrowly won the men’s 100K mountain bike race on Sunday. Lea finished in 4:16.22, edging out Brooklyn’s Alden Copley by less than one second. Mike Barton of Hanover, New Hampshire, was third in 4:22.23.

Monica Kenney of Lakeville, Massachusetts, was first on the women’s side in 4:47.48, while Beth Peterson of North Easton, Massachusetts, was second in 5:07.44. Francesca Seal (5:09.22) was third.

The women’s 50K also went right down to the wire as Caitlin Marcoux of Nantucket, Massachusetts, won the women’s 50K in 2:13.49. She narrowly beat out Lauren Festa of Devon, Pennsylvania, by less than one second. Adelaide Pearl of St. Johnsbury, Vermont, was third in 2:14.28.

Brad Patnaude of Williston, Vermont, won the men’s 50K race in 1:43.41, followed by John Winkler (1:47.11) of New York in second and Nicholas Gouwens (1:49.40) of Jay in third.

Dilin Williams of Arlington, Virginia won the 50K single speed race, which featured three total riders.
