Tupper Lake golf finishes second at sectionals
MASSENA — Many golfers in this year’s Section X Golf Championship hosted by Massena at the River Run Golf Course in Louisville, on Thursday, struggled with big numbers on the front nine during a steady rain.
Potsdam’s young leaders of sophomore Iam VanWagner, freshman Michael Saber and eighth grader Cooper Lovely avoided the pitfalls, leading the Stoners to the team championship.
VanWagner emerged as the first-day leader in the chase for medalist honors at 39-37-76, Saber came in at 39-42-81 and Lovely carded a 41-38-79 to anchor a 414-422 margin over 2024 champion Tupper Lake. Seniors Liam Langstaff (46-41-87) and Joel Allen (46-45-91) rounded the Sandstoners’ total while Wyatt Trudeau (44-36-80) and Ashton Clark (32-38-80) led Tupper Lake.
NAC Season Champion Massena placed third at 428, followed by Canton at 450, Malone at 461 and OFA 78. Bryce Flynn (44-38-82) led Massena, Dan O’Neil (41-39-80) led Canton, Liam Davis (48-46-84) paced Malone and Ethan Bouchard (49-40-89) led OFA.
Twenty seven golfers earned the right to compete for the Individual championship and the nine spots on the Section 10 team for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championship next Sunday and Monday.
Heading into the second day’s action, VanWagner held a 76-78 lead over Clifton-Fine’s Matt Daniels and three over Potsdam teammate Cooper Lovely at 79. Dan O’Neill and Raine Rumble, with 80, rounded out the top five.
Daniels, a senior, turned in a round of 38-37- 75 on Saturday to edge Gouverneur’s senior NAC MVP Raine Rumble, who turned the day’s best round 39-41-74, for individual honors at 153-154. Daniels played the second round without a double-bogey and birdied the fourth, 14th and 16 holes and Rumble overcame a triple bogey seven on the 11th hole to post the day’s best score.
VanWagner posted a 39-37 79 with seven pars on Saturday’s back nine to place third at 155. The nine-man NYS Tournament team was rounded out by Tupper Lake’s Wyatt Trudeau (80-80-160), Canton’s Dan O’Niel (80-83-163), Potsdam’s Michael Saber (81-82-163), Massena’s Bryce Flynn (82-82-164), Tupper Lake’s Ashton Clark (80-85-165) and Massena’s Chris Boyea (82-83-165)

Bears’ Creurer leads 5 Girls

Canton’s Eliza Creurer played in the Team Championship on Friday and shot an 84 on Saturday to lead the Girls State Qualifer on Saturday. Madelyn Southwick of Clifton-Fine finished at 99 followed by Erin Langtry of Norwood-Norfolk at 109, Grace Prarie of Malone at 115 and Alexa Lindsey of Tupper Lake.
