PERU — The Saranac Lake track and field teams turned in solid showings at the Section VII championship at Peru High School on Tuesday, as both the boys and girls squads finished as runner-ups in the Class C meet.

The Saranac Central Spartans swept the boys and girls team titles in this class. In the past, all Section VII schools competed in one big event against one another; however, this year, three schools — Beekmantown, Peru and Plattsburgh — were moved up to Class B.

In the Class C competition, the Spartans claimed the boys team championship with 246 points, while Saranac Lake followed in second with 138 points. Lake Placid’s boys finished with 39 points for fourth overall out of eight teams.

Saranac Central took first place in the girls competition with 273.5 points, while the Red Storm girls scored 147.5. The Blue Bombers girls also finished fourth with 38 points.

Saranac Lake’s boys squad had three senior athletes — Dustin Burke, Jake Kollmer and Liam Nobles — combine for seven individual event victories. The team also had five second-place finishes.

Nobles led the Red Storm boys by winning three events — the 200-meter dash in 23.08 seconds, the long jump and the triple jump, while placing second in the 110 hurdles in 15.5 seconds. He won the long jump with a leap of 42 feet and the triple in 19-11.

Saranac Lake got a strong performance from its throwing team. Burke won both the shot put and discus, while sophomore teammate Sam Duprey placed second in both of those events.

Burke won the shot put with a throw of 45 feet, 7 inches, while Duprey was right behind with 45-3. Lake Placid’s Michael Kern (37-0) was sixth in that event. Burke claimed the discus title with a 130-02 throw. Duprey was second (126-06) and teammate Brandon McGinnis-Theis (116-02) was fifth.

Kollmer won the same two events he did a year ago. He claimed the 800-meter in 2:00.13 and the 1,600 in a time of 4:27.59. Lake Placid’s Aidan Fay was fourth in the 800 in 2:08.78 and second in the 1,600 in 4:33.60.

Fay, who was the top scorer for the Blue Bomber boys, placed third in the 3,200 in 10:29.98. Teammate Jim Guglielmi put together a fifth-place result in the 400-meter, with a personal best time of 57.65.

In relay events, Saranac Lake placed second in both the 4×400 and the 4×800. The 3,200-meter relay team of Emmett VanBuskirk, Liam Fletcher, Keaton Daley and Colin Glascock finished in 9:21.99, while the 1,600 team, which consisted of Kollmer, Wyatt Laymon, Everest Wolford and Alex Evans, crossed the finish line in 3:54.22.

On the girls side, Lake Placid’s Leila Fey, a seventh-grader, came up big for her team in the distance events, placing second in both the 1,500 and the 3,000. She was the lone Blue Bomber girl to crack the top-three in an event.

Fey led most of the way in the 1,500, however, Saranac Central’s Sienna Boulds (4:55.61) caught her on the home stretch to steal first. Fey finished in 4:56.60.

Identically, in the 3,000 race, Boulds (10:55.09) once again edged Fey (10:58.34) at the last lap to seal another victory. Lake Placid’s Norah Francis (11:40.46) was fourth and Saranac Lake’s Cadence Kennedy (11:52.55) was fifth.

While the Red Storm girls did not have an individual winner, the team recorded four second-place results and six third-place finishes.

Reed then placed third in the high with a leap of 4-08, and finished third in the triple jump in 31-11.5.

Also in the triple, Lena Holmes (28-01.75) was fifth, while Georgia McMinn (27-07) was sixth. McMinn (4-08) also placed fourth in the high jump, while teammate Anika Wamsganz (4-02) was sixth.

Saranac Lake’s Addi Ash and Maggie Reynolds also picked up third-place finishes. Ash earned her podium spot in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:14.70, while Reynolds was third in the 800, finishing in 2:39.09. She placed one spot ahead of Lake Placid’s Francis (2:39.72), who took fourth.

In the throwing events, the Red Storm’s Brook Burke placed second in the discus with a throw of 87-04, while teammates Gracen Foster (68-0) placed fourth and Emily Bartis (63-08) earned fifth.

Saranac Lake also got some strong finishes in the sprint events, as Jovie Schenk (13:56) and Ally Bourgeois (13.66) finished fifth and sixth in the 100-meter dash, respectively. Bourgeois then recorded a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter.

Saranac Lake girls finished second in the 4×800 relay — that team consisted of Ash, Reynolds, Holmes and Eloise Zobel — in 10:35.68. The Red Storm’s 4×100 relay team of Wamsganz, Schenk, Raiana Baumann and Zuleyka Oliveras also placed second, after crossing the finish line in 55.18.
