SARANAC LAKE — Saranac Central’s Seth Petrashune tossed a no-hitter on Tuesday as the Spartans defeated the Saranac Lake baseball team 5-1 in the first game of the Section VII, Class B championship series.
Petrashune struck out 12 batters while walking just three Red Storm batters. The win gave the top-seeded Spartans a 1-0 series lead in the best-of-three championship.
Saranac Central jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning, before adding one more run in the second. Saranac Lake’s lone run came on a sacrifice fly out from Connor Gillis in the fifth inning.
Alius Martelle pitched all six innings for the Red Storm, striking out six batters while allowing five hits and two walks. The Spartans’ Petrashune, Brody Macomber, Brady Blair and Adrian Barnes had one hit each.
Saranac Lake, the No. 3 seed in the Class B tournament, also lost 7-1 in Game 2 at home. A story on that game will be in Saturday’s Enterprise.
