SLP boys lax falls to Sandstoners

SARANAC LAKE — After securing an overtime victory on Wednesday, the Saranac Lake Placid boys lacrosse team couldn’t replicate the magic, suffering an 11-5 home loss to the Potsdam Sandstoners on Thursday.

Potsdam jumped out to a 6-1 lead before SLP’s Scottie Nicholas connected on three straight goals to bring the score within two at the end of the third quarter.

However, the Sandstoners scored back-to-back goals to open up the fourth quarter, before SLP netted its fifth goal. Potsdam ended the night with three more to improve to 4-3 overall.

Nicholas netted a hat trick for SLP, while Gerald Woodruff added a pair of goals. Ryan Bartholomew and Mason Stoddard had two assists each, while Mik Denkenberger had one. SLP is now 2-4 overall.

Quinn McGaheran led the way for Potsdam with three goals and five assists, while Graham Shelly had three goals and one assist and Owen Lovely chipped in with two goals and two assists. Owen Ames, Cameron Fuller and Liam McCargar also scored for the Sandstoners. McCargar and Benjamin Draper each had an assist.

Up next, SLP will take on the Ogdensburg Free Academy Blue Devils at 10 a.m. today on the road. Following that contest, the team will host the Plattsburgh Hornets at 5 p.m. on Monday.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Salmon River 10, SLP 6

The Saranac Lake Placid girls lacrosse team fell to the Salmon River Shamrocks 10-6 on Thursday in their home opener at the North Elba Athletic Fields.

SLP’s Emma Clark scored 40 seconds into the game and the team won the first seven draw controls to take a 4-2 lead in the first quarter. In the second quarter, SLP struggled to stop the fast break as Salmon River, which improved to a perfect 7-0, scored six goals to take an 8-5 lead before the intermission.

The second half was a very physical, defensive struggle as SLP had many shot opportunities, but Jemma Jacobs of Salmon River was again strong in the net.

SLP’s Maddie Clark had another solid outing in goal with nine saves. SLP once again dominated the draw controls, winning 14 out of 20 faceoffs. Along with Emma Clark’s three goals, Tyler Burth, Wren Crist and Juliana Tremblay scored for SLP. Addison Colby and Lizzie Harvey each recorded an assist.

SLP, which dropped to 3-3 overall, was slated to host Potsdam on Friday, before hosting Plattsburgh at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

BASEBALL

Lake Placid 18, Crown Point 2

Jarrett Mihill struck out eight over, and allowed just one hit as the Lake Placid baseball team cruised to an 18-2 home victory over the Crown Point Panthers in five innings on Thursday.

Jon Caito led the Blue Bombers offensively with four hits, which included three doubles. Hyler Isham had three hits, while Owen Lawrence had two in the team’s 16-hit effort. Lake Placid is now 4-1 overall, after securing back-to-back wins over Indian Lake/Long and Wells.

The Blue Bombers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning, before scoring nine runs in the second and third. Lake Placid secured the mercy-run victory after pounding out seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Panthers scored their two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Kaden Hurlbert had the lone hit — a double — in the loss. Evan Carey started for Crown Point and struck out five batters.

Lake Placid was slated to take on the Bolton Eagles on Friday, before hitting the road once again for a non-league matchup against the Moriah Vikings at 5 p.m. on Sunday.

SOFTBALL

Crown Point 15, Lake Placid 0

After winning back-to-back road games, the Lake Placid softball team suffered a 15-0 loss to the Crown Point Panthers in its home opener Thursday.

The Panthers jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning and scored in every inning after that. Addison Hurlburt led Crown Point’s 12-hit outing with three singles.

Lake Placid’s Lilli Draper and Willow Wood combined for four strikeouts on the mound, while Crown Point’s Kaitlin Ross and Corrine Woods combined for eight. Kelsey McKillip and Brooke Meyer had the lone two hits for the Blue Bombers.

Lake Placid was slated to take on the Bolton Eagles on the road Friday. Following that contest, the team will host the St. Lawrence Larries at 1 p.m. today.

Boys

Beekmantown 4, Lake Placid 1

Girls

Beekmantown 5, Lake Placid 0

The Lake Placid tennis teams were swept at home on Thursday, falling to the Beekmantown Eagles in both the boys and girls matches.

The Blue Bombers boys picked up one point from their top player, Henry Becker, who defeated Dylan Brown 6-1, 6-3. In the other singles match, Beekmantown’s Evan Latinville secured a 7-5, 6-4 triumph over Parker Scanio.

Lake Placid’s top boys doubles team of Ian Munson and Porter Dominessey fell 6-1, 6-0 to Jackson Goodwin and Sonny Debella. In the No. 2 game, the Eagles’ Jack Brown and Tyler Sand defeated Levi Barney and Liam Gotham 6-1, 6-2. Beekmantown rounded out doubles play with Jack Thebert and Max Danville securing a 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 victory over Lake Placid’s Hayden Damour and Samuel Monsalve.

On the girls side, both of the Blue Bombers singles players were defeated by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores. In the No. 1 match, Beekmantown’s Olivia Hagadorn defeated Raquel Arreaza in straight sets, while teammate Carly Hagadorn defeated Lake Placid’s Jennifer Giroux in the second match.

In doubles play, the Eagles’ No. 1 team of Lucy Conroy and Julia Conroy defeated Fiona Sullivan and Zoe Carpenter 6-2, 6-0.

In the second doubles match, Sawyer Fleming and Jade Burdo topped Lake Placid’s Sophie Spanburgh and Avory Lemoy 6-0, 6-3. In the final match, Beekmantown’s Isla Oest and Calla Oest secured a 6-3, 6-4 win over Laura Guerrero and Yesleidys Alvarez.

The Blue Bombers will return to their home court on Monday at 3:30 p.m. to face the AuSable Valley Patriots.
