High School Roundup: Morrelli hits walk-off in Bombers win

LAKE PLACID — Vann Morrelli singled to the right center field, with a runner on second base, driving in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Lake Placid baseball team to a 4-3 victory over the Johnsburg/Minerva Irish Jaguars on Wednesday.

The game was tied 3-3, bottom of the seventh, as Lake Placid’s Hyler Isham reached first base after being hit by a pitch. Isham later advanced to second on a passed ball, before Morrelli’s walk-off hit. The Blue Bombers are now 5-2 overall.

Morrelli had three of Lake Placid’s six hits during Wednesday’s game, while sophomore Owen Lawrence had a double.

Lawrence started on the mound and struck out eight batters through five innings. Jon Caito entered in relief and struck out five and got the win with two scoreless innings.

Johnsburg/Minerva’s Nick Sauer-Jones pitched five innings and struck out four batters, and Cole Millington had five strikeouts in the final two innings.

Lake Placid opened the second with two runs, before the Irish Jaguars claimed the lead in the top of the fifth. The Blue Bombers tied the game in the bottom half of the fifth.

Lake Placid is slated to host Schroon Lake on Thursday, before traveling to Crown Point to face the Panthers at 4:30 p.m. today.

SOFTBALL

Lake Placid 9, Johnsburg/Minerva 8

Lake Placid’s Willow Wood struck out 10 batters to help the Blue Bombers softball team secure a 9-8 home victory over the Johnsburg/Minerva Irish Jaguars on Wednesday.

Addisyn Colby led Lake Placid offensively with three hits, including a triple. Brooke Beaney, Anisa Cecunjanin and Brooke Meyer each added two hits in the Blue Bombers’ 10-hit outing. Ellie also chipped in with a single as the team improved to 3-6 overall.

Johnsburg/Minerva jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning, before Lake Placid rattled off four runs in the bottom half of the third to claim the lead, off Colby’s three-run RBI triple. Senior Abbey Light scored later in that inning.

In the top of the fourth, the Irish Jaguars scored four more runs, however, the Blue Bombers responded with five runs across the bottom half of the fourth and the fifth to seal the victory.

Up next, the Lake Placid softball team will face the Crown Point Panthers at 4:30 p.m. today on the road.

GIRLS LACROSSE

SLP 16, Plattsburgh 2

The Saranac Lake Placid girls lacrosse team came out strong on the way to a dominant 16-2 win over the Plattsburgh Hornets on Wednesday at the North Elba Athletic Fields.

SLP was solid in all facets of the game and had its best shooting performance this year, scoring on 16 of 23 shots. Transitions from defense to offense were also impressive as they moved the ball with quick, accurate passes, according to the team’s coaching staff.

Emma Clark scored on the first possession for SLP, who took a 12-2 lead into halftime. The team then connected on four more after the intermission as six different players scored for SLP.

Clark and Lizzie Harvey recorded four goals each, while Tyler Burth and Juliana Tremblay each had a hat trick. Kelsi Burth and Wren Crist also scored for SLP. Tremblay had two assists, while Tyler Burth and Katy Hoffnagle each had one.

Goaltender Maddie Clark had three saves in the first half and three in the third quarter. Sophie Czadzeck had two saves in the fourth quarter as the duo combined for a second-half shutout.

The SLP girls, which improved to 5-3 overall, will host Malone at 6 p.m. on Friday. SLP topped Malone 15-1 in a matchup earlier this season.

Northeastern Clinton 4, Lake Placid 1

Northeastern Clinton 5, Lake Placid 0

The Lake Placid boys and girls tennis teams were defeated by the Northeastern Clinton Cougars on Wednesday afternoon. The Blue Bombers boys fell 4-1, while the girls squad was swept 5-0.

Lake Placid’s Henry Becker, playing in the No. 1 match, was the lone winner, topping the Cougars’ Caze Carpenter 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. The other singles match was just as close as Northeastern Clinton’s Ben Breznahan beat Parker Scanio 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).

The Blue Bombers’ top boys doubles team of Levi Barney and Liam Gotham lost to Maxx Rabideau and Colton Castine 6-0, 6-1. In the No. 2 game, the Cougars’ Cade Brooks and Kayden Dupree beat Ian Munson and Samir Dimuccio 6-3, 6-1. Northeastern Clinton’s Mason Favreau and Jacob Martin won the No. 3 match by forfeit.

On the girls side, the Cougars’ Callie Racine defeated Raquel Arrezza in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in the top singles match. Teammate Sydney Lemieaux, playing in the No. 2 match, defeated the Blue Bombers’ Jennifer Giroux 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles play, Northeastern Clinton’s Brynn Hite and Shao Juneau defeated Fiona Sullivan and Zoe Carpenter 6-3, 6-1 in the top doubles match.

The Cougars then secured the team victory with back-to-back wins in the final two doubles matches. Lucy Hicks and Grace McCarty secured a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Lake Placid’s Sophie Spamburgh and Avery Lamoy. Tenley Peryer and Alexa Gregory bested the Blue Bombers’ Laura Gurrerro and Alida Carlson 6-0, 6-1.

The Lake Placid tennis teams were slated to host Seton Catholic on Thursday. Following that, the teams will travel to Plattsburgh to take on Seton Catholic at 3:30 p.m. on Monday.
