SARANAC LAKE — The Essex County Expos’ inaugural home-opener was nothing short of dominant on Sunday.
The Expos, one of the three new Champlain Valley Baseball League teams from the Tri-Lakes, rattled off a pair of wins in Sunday’s doubleheader against the Eastern Eagles in the team’s first- and second-ever games at Petrova Field. The Expos secured a 9-1 win in the first game, before earning an 11-1 victory in the second.
It’s the first time since 1999 that a CVBL team has played in Saranac Lake, when the Saranac Lake Merchants took part in the league.
The two-game outing was capped off by the Expos pitcher Peter Han’s five-inning no-hitter, which included five strikeouts.
Essex County opened up the second game with singles from Lucas Gravlin and Mark Maybee, who both scored later in that inning.

While leading 2-0, the Expos scored seven runs in the second inning, which was highlighted by back-to-back extra base hits, starting with a double from Will Woodruff and a triple from Ben Salls. Essex County extended its lead with two runs in the fifth inning, which forced the 10-run mercy rule.
The Expos finished the second game with 12 hits. Gravlin, Maybee, AJ Campi and Evan Willett had two hits each.
In the first contest, Essex County pitcher Hunter LaValley pitched five innings, striking out 11 Eagles batters, while allowing just two hits. Matt Richards pitched in relief for the final two innings and recorded three strikeouts.
The Expos trailed 1-0 through the first two innings of the opening game, before Gravlin scored on an RBI single from Maybee in the bottom of the third inning.
While tied 1-1, Essex County’s Zyler Strack led off the fifth inning with a single and eventually scored to claim the lead. Following that run, the Expos added six more scores in the bottom of the fifth to take an 8-1 lead. Essex County scored one more run in the sixth inning to seal the team’s first-ever victory.

Salls and Campi led the Expos’ eight-hit outing with two hits. Teammates Maybee, Strack, Woodruff and Austin Lambert each had a single in the win.
Up next, the Expos will take on the Ray Brook Red Claws at the Petrova Field for another doubleheader on Sunday. The first game will be at 11 a.m., with the second at 1 p.m.
