Blue Bombers baseball advances to semis

LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid baseball team used three pitchers Thursday to combine for a one-hitter en route to a 9-1 victory over the Crown Point Panthers in the opening round of the Section VII, Class D playoffs.

The Blue Bombers’ Jon Catio started on the mound and struck out three before Jarrett Mihill entered in the third inning and recorded six strikeouts. Owen Lawrence pitched in relief in the seventh and struck out one for Lake Placid, which improved to 9-4.

Mihill got the Blue Bombers on the board with a two-run single in the first inning. However, the Panthers responded in the second with one run to make the score 2-1.

After a scoreless third inning, Lake Placid connected on seven runs in the fourth, due in part to five hits from the team.

Mihill led the offense with three hits in his team’s 13-hit outing. Caito, Vann Morrelli and Peyton Baillargeon each had two hits. Lawrence, Hyler Isham and Max Hyman added one hit each.

Crown Point’s Charles Williams had the lone hit for his team, while Owen Carey earned the pitching loss.

The Blue Bombers, which are the No. 3 seed in the Section VII, Class tournament, will take on the second-seeded Bolton Eagles on the road at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. It will be a rematch of last year’s sectional championship game.

On Thursday, the Eagles topped the No. 7 Boquet Valley 13-2 to advance to the semifinal round. During the lone match-up this season between Lake Placid and Bolton, the Blue Bombers lost 4-3 on the road.
