Three locals win girls hockey state title

Three local girls hockey players — Lake Placid’s Kendra Levitt and Harper Strack, along with Saranac Lake’s Emii Colby — who play for the played for the Massena River Queens 14U team were crowned state hockey champions on Sunday in Amherst.
The River Queens beat the Clifton Park Dyanmo 4-3 in overtime in the championship game Sunday, after previously falling to CP Dynamo.
During the title game, Strack scored the opening goal on a shot from the blue line to give Massena a 1-0 lead 2:33 into the game. However, CP Dynamo scored the next two goals to take a 2-1 lead, and nearly had a third, but that goal was overturned due to goalie interference.
The River Queens battled back and score their second goal with 2:26 left in the first period. The CP Dynamo scored the only goal in the second period to reclaim the lead at 3-2.
In the sudden death overtime, Massena’s Sophia Currier connected following a partial breakaway to secure the state title.

The state championship was a completely different outcome from the team’s previous contest with CP Dynamo on Friday. During that game, the River Queens lost 4-0. However, they bounced back with a 3-0 victory in the afternoon against the West Seneca Wings. Levitt picked up two assists in the game.
On Saturday morning, Massena beat the Stateline Hawks (Mamaroneck) 2-1 move into onto Sunday’s playoffs. Colby picked up an assist on the River Queens first goal to tie the game at 1-1 in the first period. The River Queens scored again in the second period and held on for the win.
Sunday morning, the River Queens topped the Lady Islanders (Huntington, Long Island) in the semifinal with a 2-1 overtime victory.
During overtime, Levitt made a pass from the defensive zone to her teammate Jordan Scott, who was coming out of the penalty box at the far blue line. Scott then carried the puck on a breakaway before netting the game-winner.
After two scoreless periods, the Lady Islanders jumped out to a 1-0 lead with 11:31 left in the third period, however, Massena tied the the game at 1-1 with 7:37 left in the contest to force the overtime.
The River Queens went into the tournament ranked No. 4 in the state for Tier II 14U Girls, according to myhockeyrankings.com. Frank Strack of Lake Placid s also part of the team as the goalie coach.
Up next, Massena will move on to the USA Hockey National Championships Tournament, which is being held from April 2 to 6 in Coral Springs, Florida.
