PAUL SMITHS — Paul Smith’s College student-athletes Ellen Haas and Eliot Soderholm swept back-to-back snowshoe races this past weekend with a victory in Goshen, Massachusetts on Saturday followed by a win at the Gurney Lane 5K Snowshoe Race on Sunday in Queensbury.
Haas took a lead early in Sunday’s race and never let up, securing a victory in the women’s 5-Kilometer race in 28 minutes flat.
Kelsey Stauffer of Queensbury placed second in 29:14 to push the pace throughout the 5K, but was unable to catch Haas throughout the race. Paul Smith’s College teammates Nat Ross finished in fifth with a time of 32:10, followed by teammate Chloe Freund in sixth in 33:29.
On the men’s side, Soderholm remains undefeated this snowshoe season, winning the 5K at Gurney Lane in 20:54. He was followed by Lance Purvis of Queensbury in 21:43.5, edging out Paul Smith’s Wes Burkit, who finished third in 21:43.8.
The Bobcats’ Carson Wohlers placed fourth in 25:14, followed by teammates Cazimir Couble (25:14) in fifth and Aidan Minihan (27:31) in seventh. Noah Keys rounded out the men’s team, placing 11th in 31:32.

On Saturday, Haas earned a hard fought win in the DAR Snowshoe Scramble, winning the 4.6 mile event in 54:20. Local competitor, Kristin Loiko placed second in 54:26, was poised to take the lead several times as they crossed the 300-meter lake towards the finish line. However, Haas battled back to secure the victory right before the short steep hill climb to the finish.
Also for the women, Paul Smith’s Brooklynn Shumway of Bloomingdale placed fourth in 1:01:43, followed by Freund (1:03:49) in fifth and Nat Ross (1:5:33) in seventh.
Soderholm led the DAR Scramble from start to finish, winning in 37:25. Burkit placed second in 44:03, with Wohlers placing fourth in 48:55. Sophomore runners, Couble (53:31) and Minihan (54:13) placed ninth and 10th, respectively. Keys placed 16th overall in 59:30 in his first snowshoe race ever.
Up next, the Paul Smith’s College Snowshoe Team will be hosting the Empire State Games on Feb. 1, with the three sprint events held at the college’s soccer field — 100, 400 and 800 meters — followed by the 5K at the Paul Smith’s College VIC at 2 p.m.
Later in the season, the team will be competing in US Snowshoe Nationals in Brillion, Wisconsin, with Nationals on Feb. 27 and the World Championships two days later at the same venue.
